Ranked #3 of 5

Amazon Basics Emergency Escape Tool, Window Breaker and Seatbelt Cutter, 2-Pack

Cheap orange hammer with a protective bracket

Amazon Basics orange emergency escape hammer with bracket

This is the cheapest credible way to get an escape tool into a car, and cheap matters when you are equipping three or four family vehicles. It is a traditional swing hammer, with everything that implies.

The short version

  • Orange 2-pack with a mounting bracket included.
  • Tungsten double head rated 1800HV.
  • Requires swing room, which a belted driver may not have.
  • The listing itself states it does not work on laminated glass.
  • Excellent value per unit.

Good for

  • Equipping multiple vehicles on a small budget
  • Keeping one in a door pocket as a visible backup
  • Drivers who have confirmed their side windows are tempered

Not for

  • Cars with laminated side glass
  • Anyone who wants a press-action tool for tight cabins

Build and design

Chunky orange plastic handle with tungsten heads at both ends and a blade slot in the shaft. The bracket is the underrated part: a loose hammer in a console is a hammer you will not find in the dark.

First use

It hits hard once you have a proper arc. Seated and belted, I could generate maybe half of that arc, and the difference in result was obvious. Fine for the driver's window from a standing position outside the car; harder from inside.

Real-world scenarios

Good for helping someone else out of a vehicle, and reasonable for the front door glass beside you. Poor for rollovers and cramped rear positions where there is no room to swing.

What the evidence shows

Nearly 35,000 ratings at a 4.8 average, and a listing that is unusually honest about the laminated-glass limitation. That transparency is worth something.

Care and longevity

Keep it bracketed, check the heads for chips after any test strike, and keep the blade slot free of grit.

Price and warranty

Currently listed at $8.88 on Amazon for the 2-pack, checked August 10, 2026. Amazon pricing changes without notice.

Verdict

The right answer if the alternative is having nothing in the car at all. Not the right answer as your primary tool if you can reach a press-action breaker.
